Job Title: Outreach/Education Coordinator (Full Time)

Job Summary:

Responsible for developing and leading educational programs with our partners at all State Parks and community organizations. Continue development of educational programs to foster marine conservation. Identify and implement opportunities to expand the mission of AMSEAS. Present objectives for finding educational grants to further develop partnerships. Prepare monthly reports that summarize and communicate program accomplishments, outcomes, and impact for Executive Director/Chief Scientist.

Internship Coordination - Responsible for overseeing the development and coordination of the program, assigning interns to programs/projects, conducts recruitment and interviews with prospective student candidates, responsible for onboarding interns and directly supervises and interacts with the interns, responsible for managing the day-to-day activities, evaluating intern performance, and providing progress reports to the students’ faculty sponsor. Acts as the liaison between AMSEAS and the educational institution (the student's faculty sponsor, the school's career center director, and/or career counselors).

Volunteer Coordination - Responsible for recruiting and training new volunteers, maintain volunteer database, prepare monthly reports, keep volunteers informed about current events and volunteer opportunities, provide guidance and oversight, coordinate and conduct ongoing volunteer training and schedule volunteers for events, coordinate volunteer recruitment activities and conduct volunteer orientations, continue to develop the volunteer program.

General Accountabilities:

  • Develop a consistent outreach schedule of events with our partner organizations at Hallock State Park Preserve (HSPP) and Orient State Park.

  • Work with the team to develop training material. Present and train new material to staff and volunteers to understand programs and build capacity.

  • Develop and lead outreach programs, including Connect Kids to Parks programs with HSPP and Orient Beach State Park.

  • Work with HSPP staff to manage all educational opportunities at HSPP, including nature organization presentations, school field trips and community group visit requests.

  • Develop educational materials for distribution at educational events.

  • Materials will be related to marine mammals and sea turtles, conservation efforts, and the NYS Parks.

  • Develop and implement a GPS-based virtual interpretive trail program at HSPP to allow patrons to take self-guided beach walks while learning about marine mammals, sea turtles, and good beach stewardship, in addition to accessing information about the flora and fauna experienced in the park.

  • Manage all aspects of beach cleanup events, including permitting, scheduling, advertising and conducting the events. This includes managing weekly beach cleanups for the public at HSPP and maintaining the trash collection database.

    Coordinate ongoing program development of educational/outreach programs to foster marine conservation such as seal walks, beach monitoring programs, new lecture topics.

  • Development of program assessment measures and evaluation of program activities.

  • Manage cold-stunned sea turtle patrol program at HSPP and other locations from October through December.

  • Increase awareness of parks programs, training, volunteer opportunities, and events.

  • Maintain events calendar at amseas.org and maintain online calendar postings for all HSPP and organization events and share postings with NYS Parks.

  • Identify and implement opportunities to expand activities and outreach to other coastal New York State parks

  • Represent AMSEAS at community events and multi-agency initiatives.

  • Support the stranding investigations team during events where needed.

  • Support research satellite tagging and seal and sea turtle health assessment projects when needed and applicable.

  • Assist with website content development and provide updated and relevant stranding investigation data to the public.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.

    Job Qualifications:

  • Experience: 2 years in a related field.

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree; master’s in related field preferred.

  • First Aid Training.

Field Biologist Supervisor (Full Time)

Job Summary:

Field Biologist Supervisor - Coordinates response for dead marine mammals and sea turtles, in addition, to live marine mammals and sea turtles with the local municipality, collect data on species, maintain marine mammal and sea turtle database, keeping in compliance with Federal reporting obligations - provide support to necropsy program - sea turtle husbandry tasks as outlined in Sea

Turtle Rehabilitation Task Book, Type I, II, III & IV at the tactical level - coordinate with towns for disposal of examined animals - provide logistical field research and reporting support - provide support to the Education and Outreach Program by conducting lectures and beach cleanups - Manages and conducts ongoing training with Field Biologists and Stranding Investigations /Necropsy volunteers

General Accountabilities:

  • Daily management of Field Biologists

  • Responsible for signing off on Field Biologist's Tasks Books

  • Weekly updates and reports to Stranding/Necropsy Coordinator

  • Managing calls to the 24-HR New York State Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Stranding Hotline

  • Responding to dead and live marine mammals and sea turtles, collect data on species, circumstances of stranding, and life history information

  • Coordinating with towns for disposal of examined animals

  • Maintaining marine mammal and sea turtle databases, as well as digital and physical data records

  • Supporting the marine mammal and sea turtle necropsy program and related projects

  • Provide husbandry support to sea turtles when in our critical care triage facility

  • Provide logistical support in the field on seal and sea turtle health assessment research projects

  • Provide collection and reporting on research satellite tagging, land, boat, and aerial survey projects

  • Disseminating project information to field team and educational staff

  • Supporting educational outreach programs to foster marine conservation including leading volunteer training, coordinating volunteers for events, performing lectures, beach cleanups, and leading educational activities like seal walks and cruises.

  • Maintain beach cleanup database.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.

Job Qualifications:

  • Experience: 3-5 years in a related field

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology; Master’s degree preferred

  • Incident Command System (ICS)

  • Hazwoper Training

  • Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Travel may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
